The especial province of the mother is the prevention of disease, not its cure. When disease attacks the child, the mother has then a part to perform, which it is especially important during the epochs of infancy and childhood should be done well. I refer to those duties which constitute the maternal part of the management of disease.

COMBATING DISEASES OF CHILDREN
Medical treatment, for its successful issue, is greatly dependent upon a careful, pains-taking, and judicious maternal superintendence. No medical treatment can avail at any time, if directions be only partially carried out, or be negligently attended to; and will most assuredly fail altogether, if counteracted by the erroneous prejudices of ignorant attendants. But to the affections of infancy and childhood, this remark applies with great force; since, at this period, disease is generally so sudden in its assaults, and rapid in its progress, that unless the measures prescribed are rigidly and promptly administered, their exhibition is soon rendered altogether fruitless.

The amount of suffering, too, may be greatly lessened by the thoughtful and discerning attentions of the mother. The wants and necessities of the young child must be anticipated; the fretfulness produced by disease, soothed by kind and affectionate persuasion; and the possibility of the sick and sensitive child being exposed to harsh and ungentle conduct, carefully provided against.

KIDS and CHILDREN
Again, not only is a firm and strict compliance with medical directions in the administration of remedies, of regimen, and general measures, necessary, but an unbiased, faithful, and full report of symptoms to the physician, when he visits his little patient, is of the first importance. An ignorant servant or nurse, unless great caution be exercised by the medical attendant, may, by an unintentional but erroneous report of symptoms, produce a very wrong impression upon his mind, as to the actual state of the disease. His judgment may, as a consequence, be biased in a wrong direction, and the result prove seriously injurious to the welldoing of the patient. The medical man cannot sit hour after hour watching symptoms; hence the great importance of their being faithfully reported. This can alone be done by the mother, or some person equally competent.

There are other weighty considerations which might be adduced here, proving how much depends upon efficient maternal management in the time of sickness; but they will be severally dwelt upon, when the diseases with which they are more particularly connected are spoken of.

Nursery Rhymes have been taught to children for hundreds of years, with many dating from the Middle Ages. They are the earliest educational tools that children use for learning language and counting skills. Additionally they combine movement and music teaching kids rhythm and melody.

But according to a recent study more than 40% of parents cannot recite a single nursery rhyme all the way through.

Many cultures around the world have their own indigenous nursery rhymes but most of the best known rhymes are from England and more recently the US.

Many nursery rhymes were originally political commentaries from a time when free speech was punishable by imprisonment or even death, especially if you criticized the government of the day.

Other rhymes allude to current events of the day. It is believed that Ring a Ring O’ Roses refers to the bubonic plague, while Remember Remember commemorates the Gun Powder Plot when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to blow up the houses of Parliament, an event that is still celebrated in England on November 5!

Some Nursery Rhymes are quite violent –

Rock A Bye Baby

Rock a Bye Baby
On the tree top,
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
When the bough breaks
The cradle will fall
Down will come Cradle
Baby and all.

Or

Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill
Went up a hill
To fetch a pail of water

Jack fell down
And broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after

The earliest known collection of nursery rhymes was Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book, published in London, in 1744. But, probably the most well known was Mother Goose’s Melody: or Sonnets for the Cradle, published by John Newberry in 1781. Reprinted in the United States in 1785 by Isaiah Thomas, its popularity is attested to by the fact that these verses are still commonly called “Mother Goose Rhymes” in the United States.
Although you may feel that you should try and rewrite some of the lyrics to make them less violent you shouldn’t. Psychoanalysts and educators believe that efforts to make nursery rhymes and fairy tales politically correct are a mistake. They feel that they provide a way to symbolically resolve issues and allow children to imaginatively deal with violence and danger.
Go to the library or your local bookstore and buy a book of Nursery Rhymes, or download some from the Internet. Then, by teaching your children Nursery Rhymes and acting out the movements with them you’ll have fun, while teaching them language and counting at the same time as playing, building a bond and burning energy.

If you are in a career that is limiting because of the educational qualifications you have, you can make a change by taking up a distance education program. An online education program affords you the opportunity to further your educational status and increase your chances for a promotion at your job place. Some online college courses are bogus and your inability to know the fake from the good ones can land you in hot water. Be careful not to trust any online distance education offer that looks too good to be true. Online education programs that offer you an education in the shortest amount of time should also not be trusted. If you want to avoid fraud in your search for online college courses, it is not enough if it has an email address. You should make it sure that any online college that you have applied to has a physical address and a phone number that works. Bear in mind that a post office address is not an indication that an online college is reputable. Distance education is also largely referred to as distance learning or online education. It is a field of education focusing on teaching and leaning, using Internet technology, and instructional systems. For the most part it focuses on adults, but more and more the younger generation is being involved in the design that aims to provide education to students who are not physically “on site” at the college grounds. All over the world, notwithstanding the fact that it is considered obsolete in some several circles, many institutions still use radio broadcasts in distance education. In India for example, the FM Channel is still very popular and utilized by universities to broadcast educational programs. One cannot argue against its effectiveness in this wise because India remains one of the world’s leading countries in technology advancements. Though distance learning has tackled a lot of problems in its long history, there is one problem that it is not going to deal with too soon. This is the issue of examination malpractices, or simply, writing tests under controlled situations. There is no simple way to guarantee that, so the schools and colleges play by ear as each year and each program comes. Online education programs are designed for people who have little time on their hands and are looking for a flexible study option. These are often patronized by full time housewives or workers with very little very time on their hands. Distance learning is a program that keeps the educational torch burning in the face of constraints or other commitments. Lots of audio and video cassettes have been utilized in the past. One daunting fact that limited them was their cost and bulk. Electronic technology has PDAs, mp3 players, etc., today that continue to proliferate online education in a way that is bigger than what used to avail through the course of the three centuries the practice has been on. Anyone can now do distance learning without breaking their backs.

Most kids love all things Halloween. As adults, we assume it’s because Halloween means candy and kids generally love candy. But many kids love more than just the abundance of candy at Halloween time. They really get into the ghoulish aspect of the holiday and delight in the displays of goopy brains and squishy body parts.

Halloween games, therefore, can be really fun and goopy, if you wish. The kids will go with it, don’t worry.

for starters, a brain game. There’s a fun game on store shelves where you pick through a rubber “brain” to figure out what’s in it. You can create this easily yourself. Make some jello and fill it with a variety of items, like gummy worms and other gummy candies, some small candy and trinkets and other items. Tell the kids to root around in the bowl of jello (call it a “brain” if this will get the kids more interested) to figure out what’s in it. It’s goopy and messy and kids love it. Better still, color the jello black so it’s too dark to see what’s inside and it looks more like goopy brain matter (the way kids see it, anyway).

In that same, or similar vein, kids love the spaghetti game. Be sure they are wearing a smock over their clothes or are wearing play clothes before playing this game. Make a big bowl of spaghetti and fill it with all kinds of items, like plastic bugs, gummy worms and other items that might feel a bit strange. Make the kids feel around in the bowl of spaghetti and identify the items they feel. Once they are done and cleaned up, have them list as many items as they can remember. Whoever gets the most items listed (and right) gets a prize. Spaghetti, anyone?

And, any Halloween game or activity is much more fun if you are have a scary face painting design painted on your face. There are so many designs to suitable for the halloween holidays. For example how about a skull, ghost, witch, or an alien. And, you’ll be pleased to know that learning to face paint is not that difficult. Even if you think you are not artistic. All you need is to follow along to step by step instruction.

And, of course, practice, practice , practice those face painting designs. But you’ll find you are never short of volunteers to sit for you. In fact, you are likely to find that you’re the most popular mom in the neighborhood.
