Children between the ages of five and eleven can suffer from depression and it may go unnoticed. How will you know what the symptoms are and how can you help your child live with depression? Know the signs and symptoms.

There are several reasons why a child would suffer from depression; parents getting a divorce, separation, parents who abuse them, school work may be overwhelming, they may be struggling with learning, bullies in school, relationships, peer pressures and more. Because children live a busy life today they can sometimes suffer from depression. Children are not going to come to you and tell you that they are depressed so it’s up to parents to realize the signs and know what to do in order to treat it.

It is important that you help your child with ways to ways to improve your self esteem and teach them to look after their inner health.

Symptoms of Child Depression
Some of the symptoms of a child who suffers from depression include:

* A child who withdraws from the family. When they come home they head for their bedroom and will not come out.

* A child who does not eat or just eats enough to satisfy.

* A child who changes the way they dress suddenly, and prefers dark clothes

* Refuses to join in family activities and refuses to go anywhere with friends

* Start failing tests and bringing home low grades if they usually bring home good grades

These are just a few of the symptoms that you may notice. Basically the change may not be noticed at first so you will need to pay attention to it to see. Also, sometimes, a child will change their behavior because that is the stage that they are in. It’s okay to change as long as it is a healthy change. Spending hours in their bedroom without socializing is not always good.

Your Child Has Depression – You Can Help
* Talk to your child every day. They need to know that you are interested in their day and what they did, even if it is for a few minutes. Keep up to date when you talk to your child.

* Oversee homework. If they say they have homework, check it to see if they need any help and help them if they do.

* Insist that your family eat dinner together. It may be in the dining room, kitchen or in the living room while watching a movie but make sure that everyone eats together most of the time.

* Establish a bedtime. It’s never too late to establish a bedtime so that everyone can be in bed and get enough rest. If they are not sleepy, allow them time to watch television in their room, read a book or listen to some music to relax them. Sometimes it’s hard to get to sleep at first and that is why you need to make sure that they get use to going to sleep at a certain time each night.

* If your child is active in activities you may want to put everything on a schedule so you can make sure that your child gets to eat a good dinner and goes to bed at a decent hour. They also need to have time to do homework if necessary.

It is important that you help your child with methods to improve your self esteem and remember that your child counts on you to take care of them. Your not always going to catch everything but the more you know about your child the more likely you will be able to determine when there is a problem.

After a marriage is over and you have custody of your children, you will have the responsibility for making the important decisions about your children’s upbringing and schooling. In the majority of cases, the other parent still has a right to spend some time with the children. There should be as much contact as possible with both parents as is best for the children. However, in serious circumstances, a judge could decide that it is in the children’s best interests not to spend time with the other parent.

If you do not have custody, generally, you will have a right to spend time with your children. A parent with access usually has rights to: spend time with the children, such as on a weekday evening, on weekends and on holidays. This is about divorce and how you take care of it.

As a parent with access rights, you can ask the court to order the other parent to give you advance notice - at least 30 days - if he or she intends to move the children to another home.

You can lose your access rights or they can be limited.

There is also joint custody. Sometimes a husband and wife want a divorce, but want to continue to share their responsibilities as parents equally.

Joint custody means that both of you have custody of the children. In other words, you both continue to share in making all the major decisions concerning the children. If there is joint custody, many different living arrangements are possible. The children may live with each parent about the same amount of time or live mostly with one parent. You can go to a family mediator. A mediator is generally a person with a legal or social work background who has special training in helping people resolve disputes. A mediator works with both of you and helps you discuss and decide on the arrangements for your children. You can meet with a lawyer who will explain your legal rights and obligations and help you negotiate an agreement. You can meet with a family therapist, child psychologist, social worker, family doctor or other professional who knows about the effects of separation and divorce on children of different ages.

Initial enthusiasm in after school activities tends to wane after the first excitement is over. This is but natural. The trick is to keep up the hard work even after this. How do you keep your child motivated? This is of particular importance when the child goes in for educational after school programs.

Keeping children motivated
Make the career-academics connection early on: Let your child understand how important studies are. Let him know that an excellent career is wholly dependent on wholesome learning. To develop his interest in studies, plan family activities that are connected with his studies. Emphasize the real-world connection to academics whenever possible.

Set goals:
Let your child know, through example, that hard work will be rewarded. If your child believes that achievement is a natural by-product of effort, he is more likely to put in hard work. Such children are also less likely to drop out of programs and college at a later stage.

After you have colleted all the necessary information, discuss the various options with your child. Find out what his interests are. The best way to find out what is most suitable is to ask your child. When little children are too small, you cannot completely rely on their feedback. In this case, monitor the development of the child on a regular basis. If the child shows excessive resistance to an activity, it may be necessary to look for other options. Always consider your family’s schedule when planning the extracurricular activities.
